TOward Project 2030 – What are you doing?A whale made of trash emerges from a wall in Turin for the Global Goal No. 14 about seas.
Turin, October 2018. 17 street artists are performing to reach 17 Global Goals before 2030. A breakthrough against the unsustainability of the current development model from an environmental but also economic and social point of view.
Lavazza and the Municipality of Turin jointly promote this artistic project to spread United Nations’ “message”, consisting of 17 different Global Goals, commissioned to 17 street artists.
The association IlCerchio E Le Gocce has entrusted Mrfijodor with Goal No. 14
– Life below water – with focus on sea and its inhabitants. Goal No. 14 means first prevention and significant decrease of every kind of marine pollution. Out of 63 marine ecosystems examined by ONU, the 16% is at risk, or significantly at risk, of eutrophication of the coasts.
Hence the artist, born in imperia and from Turin by adoption, had the idea to wave, into an immediate and sharp narration, the Goal No. 14 with his personal biography. The call for a precise social responsibility and the evocation of his personal experience as a Ligurian loving the sea, just like that Maurizio Giulio Natta from Imperia, who received the Nobel Prize for his studies on synthetic plastic materials in 1963. The sea and the plastic are part of the artist’s DNA.
The artist writes:
“I have interpreted the Goal No. 14’s theme – Life Below Water – using a whale as the main character of my work, being the largest marine mammal but also one of the most vulnerable. The whale represents the fragility of the marine ecosystem and the careless and shortsighted exploitation made by men”.
Even its location is anything but random.
The wall is located in Cardinal Cagliero street, in the well-known “Balun” area, close to the Porta Palazzo market. It is said “If Turin had the sea, its harbor would be right there, at Porta Palazzo”. The harbor perceived as movement, interaction, but also as something that remains secret and indecipherable within us, as poet Ungaretti loved to imagine. Life below water wants to be a condemnation of the exploitation and pollution of sea resources and a personal synthesis of the artist’s life but at the same time, a huge circle of hope for life and for the affirmation of its diversity.

A Torino una balena di rifiuti per celebrare il Global Goals 14 sui mari
Torino, ottobre 2018. 17 Street Artists per 17 Global Goals da raggiungere entro il 2030. Un passo netto contro l’insostenibilità dell’attuale modello di sviluppo, da un punto di vista ambientale, ma anche economico e sociale. Questa l’idea di Lavazza e del Comune di Torino di promuovere congiuntamente un percorso artistico di diffusione dei messaggi rappresentati dai 17 Global Goals delle Nazioni Unite attraverso 17 street artist.
All’associazione Il Cerchio e le Gocce è toccato il Goal 14 – Life below water che ha affidato a Mrfijodor lo sviluppo di un lavoro con focus sul mare e le sue creature. Il Goal 14 ha tra i tanti obiettivi riporta quello della prevenzione e riduzione in modo significativo dell’inquinamento marino di tutti i tipi. Su 63 ecosistemi marini presi in esame dall’Onu, il 16% risulta a rischio o seriamente a rischio per l’eutrofizzazione costiera.
Da qui l’artista, imperiese di nascita e torinese di adozione ha pensato di incrociare in una narrazione immediata e tagliente il goals 14 e la sua storia, il richiamo ad una precisa responsabilità sociale e l’evocazione della sua personale biografica di ligure amante del mare e di imperiese proprio come quel Maurizio Giulio Natta di Imperia, che nel 1963 ricevette il Premio Nobel per i suoi studi sui materiali plastici sintetici. Il mare e la plastica sono nel suo DNA.
L’artista scrive:
Ho interpretato la tematica del Goal 14 – Life Below Water – ponendo come protagonista una balena, il più grande mammifero marino ma anche uno dei più vulnerabili. E’ lei per me a rappresentare la fragilità dell’ecosistema marino e a farsi portavoce dello sfruttamento distratto e miope degli uomini.
Anche La sua collocazione è tutt’altro che casuale.
Il muro si trova in via Cardinal Cagliero, ovvero tra la zona del Balun e il mercato di Porta Palazzo in piazza Della Repubblica. Si dice che “Se Torino avesse il mare, il porto sarebbe proprio qui a Porta Palazzo”. Il porto inteso come movimento, interazione, ma anche qualcosa che resta segreto e indecifrabile in noi come amava pensare Ungaretti. Life below water vuole essere una denuncia, una sintesi personale e allo stesso tempo un enorme cerchio di speranza per la vita e per l’affermazione della sua diversità.
